Update 4/26/2021: Added a nosed retainer for 3mm (2.85mm) filament. Update: Using these retainers now for more than a year. Found one modification that was needed. I found that on spoked spools the retainer can catch a spoke and jam the filament feed. I have added a nosed 175MM retainer that should reduce/prevent this from happening. Update: After using these for a while I modified the design to include larger text, and an Arrow to identify the direction of the wrap. I also modified the use instructions and image to show the proper use. Why design another filament clip? I have tried many different filament clips in my attempt to eliminate tangles. The best solution I originally found was to use the spool's retainer holes; but, this has it's drawbacks. Some manufacturers don't provide adequate positions or numbers of holes; and, although less frequent, I've still had some tangles that ruined prints. Clips work well holding the filament; but, with my fumble fingers I've still caused tangles when removing or replacing them. The tangles happen when I lose control of the filament's end and allow it to spring back to the spool. What I need in a filament clip No clipping to the spool rim A flag that identifies the loose filament end Prevention of loose filament tucking under another filament loop No need to remove the clip when using the spool Work with any spool Easy to print, no assembly Easy to use I can't say that every idea behind this design is all my own. It is a compilation of the best parts of the clips I've used, mixed with my own design ideas and preferences. If you like the design please give it a "Like." One for 1.75 mm and one for 2.85 mm. Added two additional stl's that include a size label on the reverse side. Also included is a storage container to keep things neat and orderly while cycling the clips into your spool storage. Usage To store filament Slide the filament through the guide Wrap filament around the spool once over the clip Wrap around a second time and Insert filament into friction catch To print with filament Pull filament out of friction catch Leave filament threaded through guide Load filament to printer Guide inside diameter is large enough to allow filament to pull easily through clip. Additional Note: You will notice from the picture that I drew an arrow showing the direction of the filament wrap. I had situations where the filament got completely away from me and I didn't know which direction the filament was wrapped. The flag allowed getting things back in control but found an arrow helps even more. Filament in use Filament in storage position. Category: 3D Printer Accessories
