Note: I've used this Filament Lock and my Filament Retainer for more than a year. I have found the Filament Retainer design to be better suited to my requirements. I have recently updated the Filament Retainer by adding a nose to prevent catching on spoked filament spools.

1.75 mm Filament Lock

This is an improved filament lock to prevent unspooling and tangles.

This better meets my original requirements over my first design.

What I need in a filament clip:

No clipping to the spool rim ✔

A flag that identifies the loose filament end ✔

Prevention of loose filament tucking under another filament loop ✔

No need to remove the clip when using the spool ✔

Work with any spool ✔

Easy to print, no assembly ✔

Easy to use ✔

The first design works but I found that on some spools the retainer could slide and allow the filament to loosen on the spool. I encourage you to try this one.

Print Settings

Printer:

HyperCube Evolution

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

.2

Infill:

40%

Filament:
3D Solutech PLA
Whatever color you like.

Notes:

The 40% fill is to give the small area protrusions some additional strength.

How to use ==========
To store filament

Insert the filament through the guide

Wrap loose end of filament around the spool once or twice

Insert end of filament into the "S" lock

Slide the filament lock to tighten the filament onto the spool

To print with filament

Pull filament out of the "S" lock

Lock can be left on the spool with filament threaded through the guide

The guide inside diameter is large enough to allow filament to pull easily through the lock.
