Edit: I still like the spool holder, but I'm going to try https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1664313 instead. When printing a large circle, the filament still popped off the side of the spool and I'm going to be doing a lot of ABS printing, so need something that will allow a top enclosure.

I like the spool holder but I was having trouble with the filament popping out from the sides and getting stuck under the spool. So, I added a filament guide that clamps onto the dovetail rail of elenaut's "Option2".

WIP warning is because the two parts are too tight a fit still and break slightly during assembly. A drop of glue wasn't even necessary for me.

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Prusa

Printer:

i3 MK2.5

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

mixed

Infill:

mixed

Filament: Amazon and a brand I don't trust and finally used up on this PETG black

Notes:

I used a brim to help keep these narrow profiles stuck to the bed.
I printed this on my home printer instead of the Monoprice Ultimate in my office because it was a weekend project, but it should fit that only slightly smaller bed with no problem.
I printed the ring with finer layers (0.15) to help get the little bumps that lock the arm inside the ring but the arm could be fairly coarse (0.25). If I'd been using Slic3r PE instead of Simplify 3D, I'd probably go to 0.3 on the arm. But I have trouble printing in PETG from Slic3r because it does a lot more retraction.

Post-Printing

Assembling the ring and arm

I've tweaked this a couple of times and the box end of the ring still pops open a bit -- that is, it breaks between layers -- as I insert the arm. But it seems to hold well enough anyway. If someone comes up with an easy redesign to avoid this, great.

How I Designed This

FreeCAD file attached. Used Blender only to measure the dimensions of the source .stl for which no CAD files were provided.

Category: 3D Printer Accessories
