Looking to dry 3D PLA filament in a food dehydrator without damaging it? This allows you to preserve the dehydrator for food drying while also using it to dry filament and desiccant bags. You can print one ring and the lid to dry a large filament roll or some desiccant. Alternatively, print two or three rings to dry multiple rolls at once. This method works with dehydrators of the type shown and possibly others. Units like Flexzion, Rosewill, Westinghouse, and Self-Mate are available for purchase on Amazon for $35-$45. The center of these dehydrators features plastic ridges and screws protruding upwards. A spacer can be used to create a flat surface for resting filament spools. Drying temperatures range from 50C/120F for 6-8 hours or overnight. Desiccant bags can be placed on an empty spool for drying. If you print in PLA, higher temperatures may cause the material to deform.
