Filabot Fan
thingiverse
I noticed that Filabot started putting a fan on the EX2 to cool the barrel and hopper creating more of a cold zone before the extruder barrel. I don't have an EX2, but I could see the benefit of adding a fan to my Filabot Original. They will install this fan if you ship your EX2 back to them, and part with $130 in the process. However, I saw no reason why this couldn't be a customer-installed upgrade, so I designed my own from scratch. I used a 60x25mm Delta 24v fan connected directly to the power supply screw terminals. To mount it, you take out the lower bolt that holds the hopper/extruder assembly to the motor mount using an allen wrench and an 11mm wrench. Then, put the bolt through the duct bracket, reinstall the nut on the back, and tighten it back up. Use the Duct to get the angle of the bracket set right by holding it against the bracket and adjusting until the duct is sitting vertical on the outside edges. Slide the fan down in behind the bracket and use four screws through the duct, the bracket, and into the fan. The fan I used is a AFB0624EH Delta 60mm x 25mm Fan, available on eBay for $8.50 with plenty of lead length to reach the power supply terminals. The airflow from these little fans is amazing, keeping the cold zone cool enough to touch, still warm but not scorching hot like it was before. It took about 20 minutes to install after printing the parts. If you want, you can add a fan blade guard to the front of the fan, but I didn't consider it necessary since it's pretty hard to get your fingers in there once the side is back on. You have to remove both sides to install, and the other side gives access to the power supply terminals. If you have an EX2, I suggest taking advantage of Filabot's offer to install this mod. But if you're just looking to add this to the Original Filabot or want to give it a try on your own, here is my design - it works!
