Captured at the Auckland Maritime Museum for educational purposes only, this model showcases the traditional craftsmanship of Fijian sailors. All rights to "Sema Makawa" remain with its creators. The museum's signage proudly displays the details of this sacred sailing canoe: "Sema Makawa", meaning "Old Links", is a revered vessel built in 1993 as part of Fiji's rich cultural heritage. As an example of the formidable Fijian drua, it showcases an asymmetrical design and double-hulled construction, ideal for ocean voyages and ancient warfare. The largest drua could reach up to 30 meters in length, accommodating 200 skilled warriors on board. Traditionally, chiefs commissioned these magnificent vessels, which were carefully crafted by expert canoe builders. With remarkable speed, the drua could "shunt" back and forth, where the bow transforms into the stern and vice versa. The outrigger remained steadfastly to windward, while a long oar, or uli, steered the vessel through calm waters. In ideal conditions, skilled sailors used a sculling motion to propel the canoe forward. Dimensions: Length - 24 feet 4 inches / 7.42 meters; Beam - 8 feet 5 inches / 2.56 meters; Sail Area - 75 square feet / 7 square meters. Crafted by Sirilo Raqatima and Joeli Tumaimaleya, this historic canoe continues to inspire awe among museum visitors.
