This 17th-century ceramic fragment was unearthed by archaeologists at the St. John's Site, which is now part of the St. Mary's City Museum complex. The piece, crafted from high-quality ball clay, measures about 17 inches in length. In 2004, museum staff discovered a matching figurine head, which can be viewed separately online. Today, both fragments reside within the well-preserved St. John's Site Museum (visit www.hsmcdigshistory.org for more information). Scanning technology played a key role in preserving these artifacts for future generations; a NextEngine Desktop 3D scanner captured the figurine fragments simultaneously, allowing researchers to study them in unprecedented detail.
