Sculptures of this type stood watch at the two ends of the 'spirit road' (shendao), the pathway leading to the tombs of emperors, high-ranking officials or nobles. The figures, portraying animals, guardians and officers, were posed in pairs, one facing the other, and took up positions to safeguard the burial grounds.
