This ancient limestone statue of a man likely began its life as one half of a dynamic pair or group, striding confidently with his arms at his sides, grasping short staves in each hand, and dressed in a traditional kilt with intricately pleated side panels and a broad belt securely knotted around his waist. His wife's (or mother's) loving arms envelop his right arm and left shoulder, while remnants of colorful polychrome paint still adorn the statue, hinting at its rich history. Dating back to the 5th dynasty, this magnificent work of art was showcased as a prized lot in Sotheby's esteemed Ancient sculpture and works of art auction.
