This is part of a collection of terracottas that dates back to the archaic period. The earliest pieces in this set are relatively simple and hand-shaped; the latest ones are intricate works produced from multiple molds. In the archaic period, Boeotia, particularly Tanagra, led the way in developing new types, styles, and techniques of terracotta. During the classical and Hellenistic periods, fine terracottas were also created in Corinth, Athens, and other regions. The mainland Greek 'Tanagra' style, originating from Athens, spread throughout the Hellenistic world. Most of these terracottas were discovered in tombs, where they served as offerings to the gods of the underworld or as comfort for the deceased. Similar figurines were also dedicated in sanctuaries or used to decorate homes in later times. Unless specified otherwise, all terracottas in this collection were made using one or more molds.
