Human: 3D Data Visualization and Plume Analysis. The project involved three discharge lagoons with capacities ranging from 350,000 to 1.5 million gallons. A subsurface aeration basin and two large buried waste disposal pits were also part of the site. Characterization efforts included 300 borings, 667 analytical samples, 752 visual observations of oil presence, and detailed lithologic logs. A sophisticated 3D visualization system was chosen to provide critical decision support as field efforts progressed. This enabled identification of additional sampling locations and boring depths needed to effectively delineate plumes, thus minimizing unnecessary work (Figs 2 and 3). This innovative approach was successfully implemented in Seamless 3-Dimensional Characterization, Remedial Design, and Precision Excavation of PCB-Impacted Soil at the Battelle Tenth International Conference on Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds, 2016.
