In ancient Greek art, male nudity flourished, with genitals boldly exposed, whereas female genital areas remained hidden from public view in artwork. This tradition persisted in Roman art until Christianity's rise to power, when heroic nudity suddenly vanished. During the Middle Ages, only the condemned, often depicted as damned souls, were typically shown naked, their explicit depictions a stark contrast. Adam and Eve, following biblical scripture, frequently wore fig leaves or other coverings, a characteristic of Northern Renaissance art.
