In ancient Greek art, male nudity became a norm, including exposure of the genitals, while female genital areas remained hidden in public displays. This convention persisted in Roman art until the Christian conversion of the Roman Empire, when heroic nakedness disappeared. During the Middle Ages, only the unfortunate, often depicted as damned, were typically shown nude, although these depictions frequently became explicit. Adam and Eve were commonly illustrated wearing fig leaves or other foliage, adhering to the biblical account. This characteristic was particularly prevalent in Northern Renaissance art.
