The importation of opium into China from India played a pivotal role in financing British rule over India. Nevertheless, in 1839, Chinese authorities prohibited the use of opium, as British merchants unjustly profited from the lawful sale in China, while the drug remained banned within Britain. In 1841 and 1856, the British navy launched attacks on China with the aim of opening its ports to British opium exports. This led to widespread opium addiction on a massive scale. Colin Campbell (1792-1863), the man depicted in this bust, commanded the 98th Regiment of Foot during the First Opium War (1839-42) before leading a brigade during the Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848-49). This portrait is part of Flux: Parian unpacked, a striking installation by ceramic artist and curator Matt Smith, showcasing over 100 busts from the newly-acquired Glynn collection of parian ware. By seeking to understand why Museums and society celebrate certain historical figures, but not others, the exhibition challenges established notions of British history and colonialism.
