Ffestiniog Railway Quarryman's Coach

Ffestiniog Railway Quarryman's Coach

thingiverse

Here is a second generation quarryman's coach, based on an original design from the Ffestiniog Railway. I find that it is best printed in two parts: the chassis and the coach itself. Two files for the chassis are included: '009_chassis_mwb.stl' includes axle boxes in case your wheelsets fit, '009_base_mwb.stl' does not include axle boxes, so you will have to print or supply your own. Alternatively, design your own chassis, with dimensions 18x30x2.5mm, to fit snugly inside the coach body. There were three generations of quarryman's coach, which transported the slate quarry workers to and from the quarry. In the early days, coaches were uncovered and the quarrymen rode open to the elements. They would make the return journey once per week, staying in barracks near the quarry during the week. The second generation, depicted here, were covered, but did not have doors or windows. Instead, there were two open doorways on each side of the coach, which still can't have been pleasant in Winter. The brake was located in the middle of the coach and covered over. Traditionally, the youngest member of the crew would sit on top of the brake gear, while the rest of the crew had slightly more comfortable bench seating. Later on, quarrymen made the return journey to work from Porthmadog daily rather than weekly. The third generation of quarryman's coach was not far off a regular passenger coach of the time in terms of comfort, and had typical doors and windows.
