Fethard - Sheela-na-Gig - TS070-040007
sketchfab
The carved figure stands proudly on the Fethard town wall section, commanding a breathtaking view of Clashawley River and Watergate Bridge below. According to Freitag, the surrounding stones were carefully placed to cradle this remarkable carving, which seems to be rendered in the round. Freitag describes it as a robustly featured figure with a 'biggish head', intense staring eyes, and a sharply incised triangular pattern that starts beneath the left eye and radiates outward toward the wall, giving the impression of a slightly open mouth with clenched teeth. The neck is emaciated, there are no discernible breasts, deeply incised ribs, and a prominent round navel. Sitting upright, the figure's short legs are splayed wide apart, with hands slipping beneath the thighs, fingers disappearing into the vulva.
