The word "ferret" is derived from the Latin term fur, meaning "small thief." Clearly, one of the ferret's favorite activities is pilfering and concealing items. Ferrets belong to the weasel (Mustelidae) family, which also includes minks, otters, badgers, polecats, and sables as well. They generally have brown, black, white, or mixed coats. On average, they measure 20 inches in length, including a 5-inch tail, weigh around that amount, and live for 7 to 10 years naturally. Ferrets are sexually dimorphic predators, with males significantly larger than females. Various feral ferret populations exist worldwide, but the most notable and destructive resides in New Zealand. Initially imported from England between 1879 and 1883 to manage the rabbit population, these hybrids began devouring New Zealand's native bird, which previously had no natural predators.
