The Ferrari 156 was designed and built by Ferrari in 1961 as a response to new Formula One regulations that downsized engine displacement from 2.5 liters to 1.5 liters, echoing the pre-1961 Formula Two class for which Ferrari had previously created a mid-engined car also known as the 156.
