In 1952, Formula 2 specification replaced Formula 1 for Grand Prix races counting towards the World Championship of Drivers due to Alfa Romeo's withdrawal from the sport; Ferrari was the only team with a car designed specifically for this new formula. The Ferrari 500, created by Aurelio Lampredi, featured an inline four-cylinder engine mounted behind the front axle for improved weight distribution. Alberto Ascari utilized the 500 to win his first world championship, winning all but one race. Ascari claimed his second world championship in the following season, and Ferrari won all races except the last, which was won by Juan Manuel Fangio after recovering from a neck injury in an accident.
