Fernandina Island
sketchfab
Fernandina Island, formerly known as Narborough Island after John Narborough, stands out as the third largest and youngest island within the Galápagos Islands chain. Like its counterparts, this island emerged from the Galápagos hotspot, a zone of intense volcanic activity. Fernandina Island is an active shield volcano that has been in a state of continuous eruption since April 11, 2009. As the westernmost point in the archipelago, it bears a name paying tribute to King Ferdinand of Spain, who generously supported Christopher Columbus' historic voyage.
