A Basic yet Intriguing Fern Leaf/Frond Lamp Shade A fern leaf frond lampshade that is both basic and attractive. The leaf itself is made up of a single layer, only 0.25mm thick, requiring a well-adjusted printer to achieve the desired effect. The central part of the design includes slots for assembly with either five, seven or nine leaves - it's your choice how many you want! The leaves are designed to be very thin so that they will move in the breeze and look more realistic; as an added bonus, they print quickly, taking around 12 minutes per leaf or 22 minutes for two. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the lampshade also creates pretty shadows on the ceiling. To see the difference between a small clear LED and a large diffused LED, be sure to check out the photos included with this design. A file has been included with one leaf, as well as another with two leaves for easier printing if your printer is large enough. To assemble this lampshade, follow these steps: - Print one central part, preferably using no extra shells as the holes will be too small otherwise, and 15% fill (or whatever you prefer). - Print five, seven or nine leaves. Three will also work, just use every third hole of the top row. - Carefully fit the base of the leaf stem into the appropriate hole in the central part. - Attach to a light fitting. Note: This design is suitable for CFL or LED lamps only! You may encounter issues getting the leaf stem bases to fit into the holes - either file/sand them slightly or file out the hole with a square needle file (3mm or smaller). Ideally, the stems should press in snugly until the flange touches the base part. Because the leaves are thin, they will sag under their own weight. The amount of sag will depend on your specific filament. The prototype lampshade was made from aluminum-fill PLA with a black PLA central part. Aluminum filament is stiffer than ordinary PLA, so your results may vary. I may update this design later based on feedback. Print Settings: Printer: Duinotech TL4090 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: Layer height 0.25mm Infill: 15% Notes: The central part was printed at 0.25mm layer height, 0.3mm path width, with no extra shells. The leaves were printed at 0.25mm layer height and 0.4mm path width, with one extra shell. Printing time was 75 minutes for the central part and around 12 minutes per leaf or 22 minutes for two. How I Designed This: The leaf shape was created using 3D Builder from a vector image, then edited in 123D Design. The central part was made from scratch in 123D Design.
