Female Torso, Esquiline Type
cults3d
Captured in the Louvre, November 2012. The Esquiline Venus exemplifies the Pasitelean "eclectic" Neo-Attic style, blending diverse elements from prior schools - a Praxitelean vision of the nude female form; a face, powerful torso, and compact high breasts reminiscent of fifth-century BC severe style; and pressed-together thighs characteristic of Hellenistic sculptures. Interpretations of the statue's subject vary widely: some identify her as the Roman goddess Venus (potentially in the guise of Venus Anadyomene), while others see her as a nude mortal female bather or a female counterpart to the diadumenos tying up hair with a fillet.
