This terracotta statue portrays a sphinx, a fearsome female creature with a lion's body, a woman's head and breasts, eagle wings, and, according to legend, a serpent's tail. The gods dispatched her to torment the town of Thebes as punishment for an ancient transgression, preying on its youth and devouring anyone who failed to solve her enigmatic riddle. King Kreon, regent of Thebes, offered his throne to whoever could vanquish the beast. Oidipous accepted the challenge and, upon solving the sphinx's puzzle, she hurled herself off a mountain cliff in desperation.
