Female of head of the 'Aphrodite of Knidos' type at The Louvre, Paris
cults3d
The head is easily recognizable due to its striking similarities to the iconic Aphrodite of Knidos sculpture created by Praxiteles around 350-325 BC. The full face is an perfect oval shape, slightly softened by two flowing bands of locks forming a low bun held securely in place by a double ribbon. The head is positioned at a slight angle to the left, a pose that was pioneered by Praxiteles to create a sense of detachment from the earthly realm and emphasize the deities' divine nature. The original face likely underwent additional decorative painting by Nicias during its initial creation, similar to the rest of the sculpture's body.
