A woman stands tall on a rocky outcropping, her hands clasped together across one knee as she gazes upward. Her face is a picture of serenity, her eyes shut in quiet contemplation. Vladimir Domogatsky was a respected educator and professor at the Moscow State Art Institute, and a distinguished member of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. Born into a family of wealth and privilege, he spent much of his childhood living abroad in Switzerland. He later pursued higher education at Moscow University and honed his skills as a sculptor through private lessons with SM Volnukhin and S. V. Ivanov. Domogatsky traveled extensively throughout Europe, studying in multiple locations including Paris and Italy, where he immersed himself in European art and techniques, such as working with marble. He later returned to Russia, taking on teaching positions at the Stroganov School in Moscow before becoming a professor of sculpture at the Moscow Institute of Fine Arts. As Dean of the Faculty of Sculpture, his students included prominent Soviet sculptors like Lev Kerbel, Vladimir Tsigal, and D. Mitlyansky. Throughout his career, Domogatsky continued to work on animal and portrait sculpture, refining his craft while mentoring the next generation of artists.
