Since 1899, women have been part of Australia's military force through their involvement in the Australian Army Nursing Service. This group was initially formed as part of New South Wales' colonial military forces. The nurses played a role in the Boer War and their performance led to the establishment of the Australian Army Nursing Reserve in 1902. During World War I, over 2,000 members of the AANS served abroad with the Australian Imperial Force. After the war, the AANS reverted to its pre-war reserve status. In addition to military nurses, a group of civilian nurses known as the Bluebirds were recruited by the Australian Red Cross Society and attended to patients in French hospitals.
