Valenki (Russian: ва́ленки, IPA: [ˈvalʲɪnkʲɪ]; sg valenok) are traditional Russian winter footwear. Valenki literally mean "made by felting" in name. Felt boots are what valenki essentially are. They are made of wool felt and are a staple for many Russians during the cold season. However, their lack of water-resistance means they often need to be worn with galoshes to keep feet dry and prevent damage to the soles. Galoshes protect the valenki from wear and tear caused by wet conditions. Valenki were once a popular choice among Russians but lost popularity in urban areas during the second half of the 20th century due to their association with rural attire. As cities grew more modern, valenki became less fashionable and were eventually replaced by other types of footwear.
