Felix Candela, renowned for his work in reinforced concrete structures, was dedicated to proving its potential in structural engineering. He found that reinforced concrete is particularly efficient in dome or shell-shaped designs due to the elimination of tensile forces within the material. Simplicity in problem-solving was also a priority for Candela. In regards to shell design, he relied on geometric properties rather than complex mathematical means. When his company began designing laminar structures around 1950, Candela extensively researched journals and engineering articles to gather information. This led him to question the behavior of reinforced concrete and its elastic assumptions, concluding that they were in disagreement. Candela regarded structural analysis as a personal "hobby."
