Benevolent Asylum is often translated in English as a place known for charity, alternatively referred to as "the house of poverty" or "Asylum of Good Will". Initially established in 1840 with the intention of providing support to the homeless, Benevolent Asylum has found its new purpose. Currently located in San Juan, capital city of Puerto Rico's island, this historic building now functions as administrative headquarters for the Institute of Culture of Puerto Rico (Institute of Puerto Rican Culture). In addition to hosting office spaces, Benevolent Asylum exhibits artworks through various galleries with ever-changing displays. A selection of the adjacent rooms houses extensive pre-Columbian artifacts for public view. On site, one section showcases an accurately recreated Taino village to give insight into daily life during that era.
