FDL-2 Customization Pack (FDL-CP)

Introduction

This is a customization pack for the FDL-2/2X/2+. It adds additional length, can accept worker and other 19mm OD barrels, can have orange tips, has up to 4 picatinny rails for accessories, and the possibility of interchangeable side-plates for endless customization possibilities!

Right now I've released 8 side-plates, but more are on the way, along with many other accessories! If you have an idea for a side-plate, use the Blank Plates to easily design it, or drop me a message and maybe I'll make it!

Why Make a Customization Pack?

The FDL-2 is an awesome blaster. It's versatile, powerful, open source, and much more! But there have been a number of areas where it has been lacking, which I've addressed with this pack.

The first is looks. To me, the FDL has always looked so much like a toy. It's stubby, fat, and has that large "hump" for the electronics. By increasing the barrel length, it instantly looks a bit more balanced. Especially with a stock added on.

Next is accessories. The standard FDL-2 to has a single 3.5" rail, greatly limiting what accessories can be used with it. Sure the FDL-2V adds more rail space, but those files aren't available to print yourself.

Third is safety. It irks me that the FDL-2 has no optional orange tip. Literally EVERY nerf blaster has an orange tip for safety reasons, but not the FDL. This pack accepts 19mm worker barrels, worker muzzles, and any 3D printed equivalants.

And last but not least, customization. This is an odd one. You'd think that an open-source, 3D printed nerf blaster would have tons of tweaks, options, and accessories, but there aren't... All three FDL-2 types look virtually identical, the number of remixes created by the community is extremely small, and the only official add-ons are currently only available as finished products through FDL's store. This pack is meant to be a platform to allow anyone to make their blaster truly unique, with the only limit being your imagination!

Parts and Assembly

First of all, you'll need an FDL-2 of some kind. This is just a bunch of add-ons and alternate parts for it. What additional hardware you need is entirely dependent on what you are building, and how much work you want to put in.

Simplest:

Just screw in everything, and done!

No Side Panels

Print Top_Thread.stl

7x 8mm M4 screws for rails https://www.mcmaster.com/#93070A098

2x 10mm (or longer) M4 screws for connecting top and bottom https://www.mcmaster.com/#93070A101 ##### Intermediate:

Again, just screw in everything!

Side Panels

Print Top_Thread.stl

3x 8mm M4 screws for top and bottom rails https://www.mcmaster.com/#93070A098

2x 10mm (or longer) M4 screws for connecting top and bottom https://www.mcmaster.com/#93070A101

4x 10mm M4 screws for side rails + side panels https://www.mcmaster.com/#93070A101 ##### Advanced (recommended if you foresee changing the side panels in the future):

Set your soldering iron to low heat, and carefully insert the 4 heat inserts for the side rails. After that, just screw together! The heat inserts allow you to remove the side plates without wearing out the holes in your parts.

Side Panels

Print Top_Heat_Insert.stl

3x 8mm M4 screws for top and bottom rails https://www.mcmaster.com/#93070A098

2x 10mm (or longer) M4 screws for connecting top and bottom https://www.mcmaster.com/#93070A101

4x 10mm M4 screws for side rails + side panels https://www.mcmaster.com/#93070A101

4x M4 Heat Set Inserts for the side rails https://www.mcmaster.com/#94180A351

Soldering iron for heat inserts Community Contributions

Angled Magwell Grip by xfifi: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2936717

Change Log

03/09/2018 - Initial release
05/31/2018 - New angled grip designed by xfifi, link added to description

Links:
https://www.mcmaster.com/#96817A510
https://www.mcmaster.com/#96817A500
https://www.mcmaster.com/#93070A101
https://www.mcmaster.com/#93070A098
https://www.mcmaster.com/#94180A351

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Prusa

Printer:

i3 MK2S

Rafts:

Doesn't Matter

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.2

Infill:

20%

Notes:

IMPORTANT: As of right now, most of these parts are not in their optimal print orientation!rnrnNone of the base parts require support or a brim, however nearly all side-plates should have both. I also recommend not printing too quickly on the side-plates, maybe 50mm/s max.
Category: Toys & Games
