I got the chance to create the low-poly version of my Fatty Boom Boom gun and refine the entire process from start to finish. Normal, AO, roughness, and base color were baked directly from the high-poly model and used in Painter as the foundation for my textures. I removed most bolts and screws from the high poly before baking the normal map to avoid a mess with skewing - they were stamped into Painter instead (I think this is significantly faster than dealing with skewing issues). The best part is that inside Painter, I can take the textures from the high-poly model and push them even further - add more damage, try out various colors, or experiment with new ideas for a particular model. My target tris count was around 30k and I used just one 4k set of textures. It took me about 10 hours to make the low poly, do the UV mapping, texture it up, and fix any problems that came up.
