Fault zone near Bude Whaleback

sketchfab

A northward-dipping sandstone bedding plane reveals itself from a sea cliff ~20 m south of the Whaleback, Bude. Highly fractured, the sandstones and shales of the Bude Formation (Upper Carboniferous turbidites) here are cut by veins and joints. Ripple marks show on the sandstone bedding plane, which is further cut by a segmented extensional fault with throws reaching up to tens of centimetres. Relay ramps occur between segments of stepping faults. Hartley, A.J., Warr, L.N., 1990, described Upper Carboniferous foreland basin evolution in SW Britain in Proceedings of the Ussher Society 7, 212-216.
