Size 00 flat washers are commonly used in many kitchen and bathroom multi-turn shut off valves, as well as some faucet control valves across the U.S. Typically made of rubber, these washers offer excellent drip-proof closure capabilities. However, numerous types of rubber can deteriorate over time due to exposure to chlorine in municipal water supplies, rendering them ineffective when needed most. A 3D printed washer crafted from ABS or HTPLA may not provide a seal as effective as traditional washers, but since these valves are rarely closed, the quality of the shutoff is secondary to longevity. Regular PLA can be used for cold water applications, yet it may soften and become unusable in hot water situations when needed most. Notably, ABS is not a food-safe material, making it crucial to consider this factor when using it. This 3D printed washer was designed for a specific faucet repair job. Upon disassembling the shut off valve, I anticipated that the valve would use a screw through the washer; instead, the washer needed to be stretched over a post. Unfortunately, rigid washers cannot stretch, so I have yet to utilize one. The .STL file is 10 times its normal size. Update: On May 29th, 2018, I added a washer with a conical hole and printed it using Nylon (String Trimmer Line 0.065", 1.65mm). By heating the washer with a hair dryer or heat gun, it will soften enough to stretch over a post-type faucet. The small end of the washer should be placed at the top of the post. While this material is likely not food safe, giving it a light sanding on both sides before use can help ensure a proper seal. This 3D printed washer may last longer than necessary for most applications, but it will still provide sufficient sealing capabilities in shut off valves that are only closed during maintenance.
