Human behavior is contextualized by Gabriella Coleman, who locates the griefer within the online phenomenon known as trolling – the art of deliberate deception and communicative manipulation. In contrast to established norms of having a verifiable identity and clear intentions, trolling can be understood as an online practice that stages a linguistic spectacle rather than facilitating productive dialogue: supplanting consensual, bounded, reasoned discussion with actions that fall outside the bounds of common social conduct.
