The Maunabo lighthouse or Punta Tuna lighthouse, entered into service on November 18, 1892. It was designed by Joaquín Gisbert and built by Adrián Duffaut on the promontory known as Punta Tuna, or Punta de la Tuna, at the southeast end of the Island. The building is 91 feet long by 41 feet wide and was originally painted white with dark gray details. His twin was the first lighthouse of Aguadilla, which was distinguished only by its color and the details of the cornice of the tower, which is octagonal, measures 43 feet high and is located in the center of the building. "The fuel store for the lamp was located behind the tower and ventilated outside by a small shutter. Around 1960 there was a substantial remodeling of the building that included the redistribution of interior spaces, the construction of a lobby at the entrance, the addition of a back door and the replacement of the brick ceiling with a concrete one.The third order lens, which projected its light eighteen miles away, was used until the late 1970s. This lens and the lighthouse San Juan's are the only original lenses that remain in our headlights; Unfortunately, two of Maunabo's three lens panels were damaged by vandals. The clock mechanism that rotated the lens was replaced in 1939 by an electric motor, but remains in the flashlight and the weights that operated it are in the central column of the staircase. Currently the light is produced by a small lamp powered by solar panels. The balustrade of the tower, although rusty, retains its original beauty.
