The structure features a thirteen-room dwelling with one story, designed to house two keepers, centered around an octagonal tower built with stone and brick and painted red with white trim. A Moorish-style bracketed cornice supports the walkway encircling the lantern room.\nA 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Puerto Rico at 10:14 a.m. on October 11, 1918.\nThe Point Borinquen Lighthouse, threatened by erosion due to its low-lying position on the shore, was severely battered by the giant wave as it spread inland. The structure's main damage came from the earthquake. The tower shook violently and likely would have collapsed if not for the iron stairway that held it up.
