Magdalenian spearthrower spur, or crochet de propulseur Magdalénien, atlatl hook. This is based most strongly on the Faon aux Oiseaux propulseur spurs from Grotte du Mas d’Azil and Grotte de Bédeilhac. It is not a direct replica, but simplified and generalized. My last Faon aux Oiseaux seemed a bit cartoony and was more like the one from Grotte de Bédeilhac. This one more strongly resembles the example from Mas d'Azil, and is a much better execution. I haven't mounted this on a functional spearthrower yet but there's not reason why it wouldn't work. When printed, sanded, stained and painted this will be useful in a teaching collection, although it must be noted again it is not a precise replica. To bring out the details I suggest lightly carving this model after sanding, and applying red ochre or ochre colored paint to bring out the detail. Basically treat the print as a preform and finish it to your desire. Photographs of the examples named above can be seen on Don Hitchcock’s excellent website, Don’s maps (linked below). For the past 2 years I have been 3d printing (PLA, at 100% infill) spearthrower spurs and using them to throw darts. I have yet to experience a failure, but your experience may vary. I sand them, apply hide glue, and bind them to the shaft as if they were antler. This is an easy way to make a propulseur without having to carve antler, which is expensive, hard to work dry, and stinks when you work it wet.I am presenting these 3d models to everyone, free of charge. None of them were directly scanned from original (“real”) artifacts, but made off of copies which I have personally carved myself. Because of this, I own the rights to all of these; and I hereby give you free access to use them for whatever purposes you desire. If you do use these models or data derived from them in a publication, please thank me or provide a citation to this page; while the models are simple they represent a fair amount effort in research, carving, scanning, etc.Sources:https://donsmaps.com/bedeilhac.htmlhttps://donsmaps.com/masdazil.htmlPalaeolithic Spear-Throwers.
