Pan's Labyrinth is a fantasy film written, produced and directed by Guillermo del Toro, released in 2006. The film takes place shortly after the Spanish Civil War and centers around Ofelia, a young girl who sees herself designated as the princess of an underground world by a faun. She must navigate three trials to regain her throne while her pregnant mother falls ill and her stepfather, Captain Vidal, hunts down anti-Franco guerrillas in their region. Del Toro draws inspiration from classic fairy tales to explore themes he previously touched on in The Devil's Backbone. The English title references the Greek god Pan but del Toro clarifies that his faun is not a reference to this mythological figure. Shot in Spain's Sierra de Guadarrama mountains in 2005, the film premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and received widespread acclaim from audiences and critics alike. It has won numerous awards, including three Academy Awards and the Hugo Award for Best Picture.
