I just widened the holes to see if it will improve airflow better than my previous attempt, which didn't provide enough air circulation. I've kept some parts intact that I'll use for the sensor and another one in the fan for illuminating a 3-watt LED light. The component designed for a 40x40x20mm fan fits perfectly for the lights.
