The Famine Pot: A Harrowing Reminder of Ireland's Turbulent Past Ireland's history is forever marred by the Great Famine, a devastating period that lasted from 1845-1852. During this time, the country's population plummeted by approximately 25% due to disease, starvation, and mass emigration. In workhouses across Ireland, famine pots played a crucial role in feeding those ravaged by hunger and starvation. Many of these institutions received a pot courtesy of the government under the Soup Kitchen Act of 1847. A group of compassionate Quakers traveled to Donegal during the famine's darkest hours, witnessing firsthand the dire conditions faced by the people. Shocked by what they saw, they established soup kitchens throughout the county to provide sustenance for the starving. The Quakers generously donated 19 large iron cauldrons to Donegal, most of which were crafted in Shropshire and shipped from Liverpool. Photogrammetry work was conducted by Jurand Macioszczyk.
