The Small Family Car Small cars designed for a smaller number of passengers usually fall into one of two classes: the mini-car and the subcompact. A smaller class of automobiles also falls into these categories including kei-cars found mainly in Japan. The larger cars in the small automobile category may sometimes be known as compact cars, which often blend features from both classes of cars. These cars were typically made using unit bodies to reduce cost and to allow the passenger compartment and chassis to share one outer body shell with some manufacturers even sharing parts. They could range in power and luxury depending on model with some models having up to six cylinders and other features such as full suspension or four wheel drive often not available at lower price levels. The use of more materials including plastic has also been implemented on a few small cars, where they replaced the typical steel construction which reduced the weight of these automobiles by using them in addition to other innovative designs. However, many are built primarily with high tensile strength steels because their use resulted in greater savings of money.
