Clearly, throughout ancient Egypt's formative years, as well as the Predynastic period, men took great pride in sporting beards. We witness this trend vividly depicted on the Narmer palette, where officials and rulers of the Old Kingdom, such as Prince Rahotep, proudly sport moustaches and full beards adorn mummy masks of the First Intermediate Period and the Middle Kingdom, including that of Ankhef from the 12th Dynasty. However, during the early Dynastic period, shaving emerged as a fashionable trend among the noble classes. This style eventually trickled down to the rest of society, with people mirroring the customs of their higher-ranking peers.
