The roundels sit atop the southern range of the palace, approximately 7 meters above ground level, as part of a comprehensive renovation undertaken by King James V in 1541. A total of ten intricately carved roundels adorn the south facade, rivaling the artistic excellence found in contemporary French and Italian sculpture. It is highly probable that Nicholas Roy, a skilled French master mason, crafted these exquisite works, which were brought to Scotland by King James V with the intention of recreating the grandeur of the French royal court. As part of this ambitious architectural project, the roundels contribute to what was then the most forward-thinking Renaissance design in Britain.
