The ornate roundels are situated approximately 7 meters up on the southern facade of the Palace and represent a significant component of the extensive renovations undertaken by James V in 1541. A total of ten intricately carved roundels adorn the south range, boasting an artistic quality rivaling that of their contemporaries in France and Italy. Crafted with precision and flair, they were likely created under the skilled hands of the French master mason Nicholas Roy, who was summoned to Scotland by James V to infuse the Palace with the grandeur of the French court. As such, these roundels serve as a testament to the most ambitious Renaissance architectural endeavors in Britain at that time.
