Sam was raised in a rough Harlem neighborhood, where violence was a constant presence. His father, a minister, had lost his life trying to break up a fight, leaving behind a grieving family. Two years later, Sam's mother fell victim to a mugger's brutality, sending him into a deep well of despair and anger. The pain and fury that consumed him would eventually lead him down a path of crime, as he abandoned his community work to become a racketeer working for the mob under the alias "Snap" Wilson. A mission in Rio de Janeiro ended with Sam's plane crashing on a remote Caribbean island, where the Red Skull and his henchmen, the Exiles, were hiding out. The Red Skull saw an opportunity to use Wilson as a pawn against Captain America, who was also searching for him on the island. The Skull believed that Wilson's idealism would be enough to make him a crimefighting partner, allowing the villain to use him against his enemy at a later date. Using a Cosmic Cube, the Red Skull transformed "Snap" into Sam and gave him the ability to communicate with birds telepathically, especially Redwing, a bird he had bought. With this new power, Sam helped Captain America defeat the Red Skull and became his partner as the Falcon.
