To achieve a smooth surface with insoluble PLA, consider an alternative method known as "PLA-burndropping." To do this, use a 3mm diameter black PLA (transparent PLA works too, but not soft PLA); prepare a fireproof base and object to coat. Light the tip of the PLA on fire, tilting it to control the melting while avoiding burning out. Allow the molten PLA to cool by dropping onto various areas of the object. Select large parts without intricate geometries, such as vases, and print with thick walls and layers for optimal results. Note that the finish is smooth but not flat, may have microscopic bubbles, shows discoloration in lighter colors, and is more brittle than the base material. Ensure safety by performing this process only in a fireproof, vented environment (preferably outside), keeping droplets away from skin, and being cautious of burning droplets that can ignite paper. Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any accidents caused by PLA-burndropping.
