The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, twin turbofan engine jet developed for the United States Air Force's needs. It gets its nickname "Warthog" or "Hog", but its official name originates from the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, an effective World War II fighter-bomber used to attack ground targets. The A-10 was created specifically for close air support (CAS) of friendly troops on the ground, and it excels at destroying armored vehicles and tanks quickly. It entered service in 1976 as a unique aircraft designed solely for CAS in the USAF. Additionally, the A-10 provides forward air controller – airborne (FAC-A) support by directing other planes to attack enemy forces on the ground. Aircraft used mainly in this role are designated OA-10.
