Introduced in 1950 by Fokker, the F-27 twin-engine turbo-prop commercial passenger airliner made its maiden flight in 1955. Fairchild Hiller acquired the manufacturing license and produced the aircraft under the name Fairchild F-27. The prototype experienced tail-heaviness, which led to fuselage extension and increased seating capacity. West Coast Airlines welcomed the first operational Fairchild F-27 in September 1958. These versatile airliners served numerous operators and excelled in small airline front lines. Retirement of these aircraft began in the 1980s, with some still in service today. The F-27's legacy includes the Fairchild Hiller 227, Fokker F-50, and F-60 derivatives.
