The Fairchild F-27 is an adaptation of Fokker's 1950 twin-engine turbo-prop commercial airliner, the F-27. It first flew in 1955 and was produced by Fairchild Hiller under license from Fokker. The prototype experienced tail heaviness which led to fuselage stretching, adding three feet and three seats. The first operational F-27 entered service with West Coast Airlines in September of 1958. Operated by various airlines, these aircraft were highly effective for small carriers. Retirement began in the 1980s, but some remain in service today. The F-27 inspired the development of Fairchild Hiller 227 and subsequent Fokker F-50 and F-60 variants.
