It saw its maiden flight in 1955 and was manufactured under license by the Fairchild Hiller companies in the U.S. The F-27 prototype was initially tail-heavy, necessitating fuselage lengthening by three feet to balance the center of gravity. This modification also added three additional seats. West Coast Airlines received the first operational F-27 in September 1958; these aircraft were operated by numerous companies and consistently excelled as workhorses for smaller airlines. Retirement began in the 1980s, but some remain in service today. The F-27 eventually led to the development of the Fairchild Hiller 227, a stretched version, and further design evolutions included the Fokker F-50 and F-60.
